Our Mission

Surfing is more than just a sport: it is an experience that hooks from the very first wave caught and ignites a fire inside every time you paddle out. We are family bound by that love of the ocean and gathered by the call of the waves. Our mission is to unite current and future surfers from Greater Philadelphia and New Jersey to nurture a community that educates, gives back, and empowers. As a socially-conscious collective, Philly Surf Crew members are dedicated to our communities through:

  1. Participating in environmental efforts to keep our beaches and waterways clean.
  2. Sharing the love of surfing to children, groups, and communities who traditionally lack access to the ocean.
  3. Supporting charitable efforts to help those organizations that strengthen the social fabric of our society.

Open to all levels and all walks of life: join us in our quest to get stoked, and pass it on.

Empowerment Initiatives

Empowerment starts with you and we are working hard to enable time and access to get people into the water and learn to the best of our ability. Meet the Crew!

Steve, Founder

The OG of the group and intermediate surfer, Steve’s frequent use of the phrase, “soooo stoked” has resulted in it being banned in 8 different countries across 3 continents. A dedicated snowboarder he enjoys working on his aerials and butters. He is a staunch anti-plantist, and he has pledged himself to the life of a vegetarian in an effort to not only be healthy and centered, but to increase his plant kill-count.

TopherDirector of Stoke

Former Jersey native, intermediate surfer, and taco enthusiast you will frequently find him elbows deep working on a motorcycle. He spends his time traveling and photographing people when not surfing. When asked to describe himself using one word, he chose: “bad at following directions”.

Kenneth, Surf Instructor

The only true Jersey local and resident to the group Kenneth teaches our beginner sessions and you will often hear his battle cry of “paddle!!” cutting through the waves. Specializing in great wax jobs and protecting his lawn, he prides himself on teaching all new surfers the number one rule: “Don’t drop in!”. You can find him sailing past everyone on his Fly board or asleep under a towel in the sand.

TomChief Hair Flipper

As a young Marine stationed in Hawaii in the 90’s he picked up surfing at one of the island’s best and well known surf spots, North Beach. When he’s not surfing, he enjoys spending time with his daughters, mountain biking, climbing, snowboarding, and travelling. A working safety professional, he serves on several committees for professional organizations and OSHA. He joins Philly Surf Crew to help others surf at their potential, and to give back to the community. Tom’s favorite words to live by are, “Good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement.”
